St. Martin Church

St. Martin Church

According to the legend this church was built upon the site of the birth house of St Martin. The first church here dates from the 9th century. Today's Baroque edifice holds recently discovered details from the Romanesque and Gothic period.

The seven altars and the pews are Baroque works achieved around 1700. The altarpiece depicting St Vincent is framed by statues of kings St Stephen I and St Ladislaus.

In the 11th century a wooden structure replaced the original 9th-century church. This first church had an early Romanesque sanctuary which was followed by a rectangular Gothic sanctuary with a cross vault erected during the reconstructions between the 13th and 15th century. This was refurbished in a Baroque style between 1668 and 1672.

The last significant construction work took place in 1930-1931 when the church was lengthened by 11 metres.

This church built on foundation walls from the Roman period and the monastery next to it once belonged to the Dominican order. The Baroque monastery joins the church from the south.

Can be visited upon prior agreement.
